Even if you don’t have the luxury of a personal gardener or volunteer plant sitter, leaving your gardens or containers to take a vacation doesn’t have to induce guilt and concern. A range of DIY or ready -made options are available to keep your green friends watered during your absence.

For Containers

DIY self-watering devices include upturned bottles (discreet, clear plastic or eye-catching wine bottles) or wick & reservoir set-ups. Always start with a thoroughly watered plant, before putting a water-filled bottle or wicking tray in place. Later, if reservoirs are emptied and soil dried from too long without attendance, soil will need to be thoroughly watered before bottles or reservoirs are refilled.

If DIY is not your thing, you can purchase self-watering pots in a wide range of styles and sizes or drip irrigation kits specific to containers. These irrigation systems have timers available making them invaluable during vacation time, but also a nice luxury when you’re home and back to a busy schedule.
