DIY self-watering devices include upturned bottles (discreet, clear plastic or eye-catching wine bottles) or wick & reservoir set-ups. Always start with a thoroughly watered plant, before putting a water-filled bottle or wicking tray in place. Later, if reservoirs are emptied and soil dried from too long without attendance, soil will need to be thoroughly watered before bottles or reservoirs are refilled.
