Why June is Prime Time for Planting

Tips for a Thriving Summer Garden
Brought to you by Sixteen Acres Garden Center in Springfield, MA

June is here—and so is your window of opportunity to plant, grow, and enjoy a gorgeous, productive garden all summer long! Whether you’re just getting started or filling in a few final gaps, now is one of the best times to plant in Western Massachusetts.

At Sixteen Acres Garden Center, we’ve stocked our benches and beds with fresh, healthy plants ready to settle into your soil and take off in the warm summer sun.

Annuals: Instant Impact

Annuals planted in June will bloom continuously through summer and into fall—especially if you choose tried-and-true favorites like petunias, marigolds, impatiens, and zinnias. Add these vibrant bloomers to containers, garden beds, or hanging baskets for immediate color and curb appeal.

💡 Pro Tip: Water thoroughly after planting, and use a slow-release fertilizer to keep blooms coming strong.

Perennials: Strong Roots for Years to Come

June-planted perennials take advantage of warm soil and long days to establish quickly. You’ll enjoy flowers this season and come back to a more robust plant next year. Think coneflowers, daylilies, salvia, and yarrow—all tough performers for our region.

💧 Water deeply every few days during the first two weeks to help new perennials build a solid root system.

Shrubs: Structure and Seasonal Beauty

This is a great month to plant flowering shrubs like hydrangeas and spirea, as well as evergreens for structure and privacy. Our team can help you pick the right shrub for sun, shade, or screening.

🌞 Place sun-loving shrubs in a spot with 6+ hours of direct sunlight per day for best growth.

Late Veggies: It’s Not Too Late!

Still dreaming of a harvest? It’s not too late to plant fast-growing veggies like cucumbers, summer squash, beans, basil, and cherry tomatoes. We even have starter plants that give you a head start.

🥬 Mix in compost or Coast of Maine soil to boost nutrients and improve moisture retention.

Soil Prep & Watering Tips

  • Loosen and amend soil before planting to improve drainage and root growth.

  • Water early in the day to reduce evaporation and prevent disease.

  • Add mulch around new plantings to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
